| Use a Good Power Bar or UPS |

Always use a good surge protected power bar or a UPS with your computer system.
The electrical system has many voltage spikes and surges from things like toasters, hair dryers etc. These spikes and surges can destroy a hard drive or other components in your computer.
A good surge protected power bar will cost between $30 and $40. It must have a power dissipation rating of more than 2000 Joules. The surge protection components in an inexpensive power bar can be destroyed after 2 or 3 spikes or surges and there is no indication of failure.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) provide excellent protection as well as initiating a controlled shutdown in case of a power failure.
